Dark Matter

by Blake Crouch

Review

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch is a thrilling science fiction novel that explores the concept of multiple universes and the consequences of a single decision. It's a rollercoaster of a ride that will leave you questioning the nature of reality and the choices you've made in your life. The story centers around Jason Dessen, a physicist and college professor who gave up his research to start a family. One night, he is abducted and wakes up in a world that is not his own. He soon discovers that he is in a parallel universe where he never gave up his research and has achieved a level of success beyond his wildest dreams. But this success comes at a cost, and Jason realizes that he may never be able to return to his original universe. The concept of multiple universes is not a new one in science fiction, but Crouch puts his own spin on it. He explores the idea that every decision we make creates a new universe, and that there are an infinite number of universes in existence. This idea is mind-boggling and makes for a fascinating read. Crouch is a master of pacing and tension, and he keeps the reader on edge throughout the entire novel. There are plenty of twists and turns that will leave you guessing until the very end. The writing is sharp and engaging, and the characters are well-developed and relatable. Jason is a sympathetic protagonist, and his journey is both exciting and heart-wrenching. One of the strengths of Dark Matter is how it explores the consequences of a single decision. Jason's life takes a drastically different path based on one choice he made many years ago, and he is forced to confront the reality of what his life could have been. This is a universal theme that will resonate with readers, as we all have moments in our lives where we wonder "what if?" The novel also touches on deeper philosophical questions, such as the nature of reality and the meaning of life. Jason's journey forces him to confront these questions, and the answers are not always easy to come by. Crouch does an excellent job of exploring these ideas without getting bogged down in heavy-handed philosophizing. While the novel is primarily focused on the science fiction elements, there are also some emotional moments that will tug at your heartstrings. Jason's relationship with his wife, Daniela, is a central part of the story, and their love for each other is both touching and heartbreaking. The novel also explores the theme of identity, as Jason struggles to come to terms with who he is and what he wants out of life. There are a few minor flaws in the novel, such as some plot conveniences and a few moments that stretch the suspension of disbelief. However, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise excellent book. Overall, Dark Matter is a must-read for fans of science fiction and anyone who enjoys a good thriller. It's a thought-provoking and exciting novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. It seems as if Dark Matter is currently being filmed for a TV Series with Apple TV. I think the book lends itself well to adaptation and I for one can’t wait to see the finished product.
